Support for ENDA grows as Senate vote nears

October 30, 2013

Since Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid announced on Monday that the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) will come up for a vote before Thanksgiving, support for the legislation has steadily grown. As we noted yesterday, Sen. Bill Nelson has signed on as a co-sponsor. Both Senators Pryor and Senator Manchin have signaled that they will vote for ENDA, meaning that all of the Senate Democrats now support the legislation. Additionally, Senator Portman commented this week that he’s inclined to support the bill. A vote on ENDA is expected as early as next week.

Statement from Rea Carey, Executive Director, National Gay and Lesbian Task Force:

The momentum for the Employment Non-Discrimination Act continues to grow with the announcements by Senator Mark Pryor and Senator Joe Manchin in favor of ENDA. The majority of Americans believe that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people should not be discriminated against at work because of who they are or who they love. This is an historic opportunity for all senators to protect millions of LGBT people from employment discrimination.
