Task Force Urges Michigan House to Reject Anti-adoption Bills

September 10, 2013

The Task Force is urging members of the Michigan House of Representatives to reject two measures in the Committee on Families, Children, and Seniors, which would allow adoption agencies to discriminate against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people, denying adoptions based on a person’s sexual orientation and gender identity.

“The proposed bills in the Michigan House of Representatives which seek to allow adoption agencies to deny adoption based on their moral or religious beliefs are discriminatory, unfair and immoral,” said Darlene Nipper, deputy executive director of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force.

“Discrimination against parents is discrimination against children. The more than 14,000 children in the Michigan’s foster care system deserve a chance to live in a home with loving and committed adoptive parents. We urge the members of the Michigan House to reject any license to discriminate against LGBT people. There is no place for discrimination in our laws and in children’s lives,” urged Nipper.
