AFL-CIO Delivers Justice for Transgender Workers

September 10, 2013

Today we thank the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO) for amending its constitution to ban discrimination based on gender identity or gender expression.

“We thank the AFL-CIO, the country’s largest labor federation, for doing justice for transgender workers by amending its constitution to ban discrimination based on gender identity or gender expression”, said Rea Carey, executive director of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force.

“Ninety percent of transgender people reported experiencing harassment, mistreatment or discrimination on the job in our study, Injustice at Every Turn: A Report from the Transgender Discrimination Survey. That is why it is so critical for these protections to be in place for the more than 12 million workers that are represented by the AFL-CIO. It also sends a strong message to employers and unions that transgender people need the same protections as everyone else,” concluded Carey.
