LGBT community to President Obama: Hands off Social Security

July 8, 2011

Social Security faces an immediate threat at the deficit-reduction talks in Washington. There is a proposal on the table to cut the annual Social Security COLA (Cost of Living Adjustment).

President Obama told us when he was a candidate for president he would not cut Social Security benefits, including the COLA.

Call President Obama now (202) 456-1111 and tell him to keep his promise – no cuts to Social Security benefits!

The Social Security COLA helps your benefits keep pace with inflation. The current COLA is already too low because it does not account for rising health care costs, which hurt seniors and people with disabilities the most.

Now they want to make it even lower. Under the proposal, after 10 years the average benefit will be cut by about $600 a year. After 20 years the cut will be about $1,000 a year. The typical Social Security benefit is only $13,000 a year.

President Obama is deciding what to do right now. Please call him today and say: “No Social Security cuts.”

Social Security belongs to you. It should not be used as a piggy bank by Washington politicians. Social Security has not contributed a penny to the deficit. Your benefits should not be cut to reduce the deficit.

We can stop these cuts but it requires your urgent help. Decisions will be made any day.

Statement by Rea Carey, executive director, National Gay and Lesbian Task Force:

Hands off Social Security, Mr. President! Targeting our country’s most vulnerable and shortchanging people who have paid into Social Security their entire working lives is unfair and politically unwise. This pivot by the president — who has previously stated that Social Security doesn’t add to the federal deficit — is beyond stunning. Social Security is a promise our country must not break, for we will break it on the backs of the sick, the poor and the old. Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender seniors and disabled people rely heavily on Social Security because many are single and lack other economic resources to help them in their retirement years. In addition, LGBT people are more financially vulnerable because of pervasive discrimination in marriage and employment. Mr. President, now is the time for leadership. Don’t bend and break under the greed and financial shenanigans that pushed our country into this mess in the first place.

Call President Obama (202) 456-1111 and tell him to keep the promise: Stop Social Security cuts now!

If you had an email, I would sign. I don’t call the WH for anything.
