U.S. Department of Education offers guidance to curtail bullying in schools

October 26, 2010

The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force responded today to guidance issued by the Department of Education on student harassment and bullying. It is stipulating that school administrators be required to protect lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) students from gender-based and sexual harassment under Title IX.

Task Force Executive Director Rea Carey:

We commend the Department of Education for taking steps to protect all students from bullying and harassment. Clearly, this is a national epidemic that must not be allowed to continue. Schools and administrators have been put on notice that they must protect LGBT students from harassment in order to avoid being in violation of federal law. However, much more needs to be done. We continue to urge the administration to push for two critical bills that explicitly cover lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth: the Safe Schools Improvement Act and the Student Non-Discrimination Act. Our elected officials can and must do more to protect our young people.
