Another voice for marriage equality as American Academy of Pediatrics takes a stand

March 21, 2013

More terrific news on the marriage equality front. On the heels of this week’s ABC News/Washington Post poll showing public support for the freedom to marry at an all-time high, the nation’s largest pediatrics group, the American Academy of Pediatrics, has come out for marriage equality saying that allowing same-sex couples to marry is in the best interests of their children.

The policy says that if a child has two same-sex parents who choose to marry, “it is in the best interests of their children that legal and social institutions allow and support them to do so.” Read the full story here.

Academy officials said they wanted to make the academy’s views known before the Supreme Court hears arguments next week in the Prop. 8 and DOMA marriage cases.

The academy’s statement notes that several other national health groups have supported the freedom to marry, including the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Family Physicians, the American Psychiatric Association, the American Psychological Association and the American College of Nursing.

Dr. Ben Siegel, chairman of an academy committee that developed the new policy, told the Associated Press that its focus is on “nurturing children. We want what’s best for children.”

Please join us next week as we rally at the Supreme Court for marriage equality! Details here.
