Task Force rallies in support of educational opportunity at the Supreme Court

October 10, 2012

Task Force Executive Director Rea Carey speaks at the press conference in front of the U.S. Supreme Court during Fisher v. University of Texas.

The Task Force rallied with a wide range of organizations today during oral arguments before the Supreme Court in Fisher v. University of Texas, a major affirmative action case in which the high court is being asked to declare the university’s admissions policy inconsistent with — or to entirely overrule — a 2003 Supreme Court decision stipulating that race could play a limited role in the admissions policies of universities. The Fisher case has implications for diversity, educational opportunity and the future of our workforce.

At a press conference on the Supreme Court steps, Task Force Executive Director Rea Carey said:

I want to voice the LGBT community’s unequivocal support for the University of Texas and every other college and university around the country that values diversity and talent in the classroom.

Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people recognize what a lifetime of discrimination and exclusion from the structural institutions of the country can do. Promoting diversity, and through the experiences gained from diverse communities, we can build a more understanding and accepting society.
