Task Force calls for full investigation in Nebraska attack

July 24, 2012

The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force is calling for a full investigation into the brutal attack on a lesbian in Lincoln, Nebraska. According to reports, the woman says she was attacked during a home invasion in which she was bound and had anti-LGBT epithets carved into her. Task Force Deputy Executive Director Darlene Nipper says:

This brutal and terrifying act of violence has left many shaken, both in Nebraska and across the country. Our thoughts and prayers are with the woman and her loved ones. We urge police to investigate this case fully, including the possibility that this attack was motivated by hate and bias.

Outlinc President Tyler Richard issued the following statement on behalf of the Outlinc board:

We are shocked and saddened by the report of an alleged hate crime involving a member of the LGBT community early Sunday morning. Our hearts go out the victim, her family and close friends. Many in our community are understandably experiencing a great deal of sadness, anger and confusion. We look to our entire community to pull together in this difficult time. Outlinc has full faith in the Lincoln Police Department who has a long history of support for Lincoln’s LGBT community. We trust that their investigation will be fair and complete and we await the results. As we consider the possible impetus for this horrific attack we are reminded more than ever why fairness is vital in our city.

Lincoln Mayor Chris Beutler denounced the attack, saying:

Hate crimes are despicable and appalling to me and to all Lincoln residents. Lincoln strives to be a community that embraces tolerance and equality. We stand united with our gay and lesbian citizens in denouncing violence directed at any group.
