New York celebrates one-year anniversary of marriage equality

July 24, 2012

Task Force Executive Director Rea Carey celebrates New York marriage equality.

One year ago today, same-sex couples in New York were able to legally wed. The Task Force extended congratulations to all the same-sex couples who began tying the knot in the Empire State last year. We were proud to support New Yorkers United for Marriage in the effort to secure marriage equality in 2011.

According to Mayor Bloomberg and Council Speaker Christine Quinn, marriage equality generated $259 million of economic benefits for New York City in the first year. Additionally, at least 8,200 marriage licenses for same-sex couples were issued, accounting for more than 10 percent of the 75,000 wedding licenses issued in the Big Apple in the past year.

The Task Force wishes all of those in New York who were married on this day last year a happy anniversary and promises to continue fighting for the repeal of the so-called Defense of Marriage Act.
