Talking transgender equality & ENDA at Netroots Nation
At the fantastic Blogging for Transgender Equality panel at Netroots Nation today, a big theme emerged around the need to lift up voices within the transgender community. Monica Roberts, also known as @TransGriot, specifically spoke about the exciting progress around the upcoming Senate hearing on the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA). For the first time ever, an openly transgender person will testify on ENDA.
Kylar Broadus, founder of the Trans People of Color Coalition, will be one of five witnesses at the Senate Health, Education, Labor & Pensions Committee hearing. The hearing is titled “Equality at Work: The Employment Non-Discrimination Act” and will also feature M. V Lee Badgett, research director of the Williams Institute; Samuel Bagenstos, a law professor at University of Michigan; and Ken Charles, vice president of diversity and inclusion, General Mills, Inc. The only opposition witness is Craig Parshall, senior vice president and general counsel of the National Religious Broadcasters Association.
The Task Force will be submitting written testimony, and we look forward to Tuesday’s historic hearing, but we also want to encourage the committee to take the next step and vote on ENDA. Act now to tell Sen. Harkin (D-Iowa) to bring ENDA to a vote!
