Remembering Dr. Alfred Freedman

April 21, 2011

Today, the New York Times remembers Dr. Alfred Freedman, who passed away this week at the age of 94. Dr. Freedman was president of the American Psychiatric Association (APA) in 1973 when the organization took the historic step declaring that homosexuality was not a mental illness. Sue Hyde, director of Creating Change, called the APA’s change “the single most important event in the history of what would become the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender movement.”
