Champlin Park High School students at Creating Change

February 3, 2011

Last week, Southern Poverty Law Center, National Center for Lesbian Rights and Faegre & Benson, LLP filed a lawsuit against the Anoka-Hennepin School District and Champlin Park High School (CPHS) in Minnesota on behalf of two lesbian students, Desiree (“Dez”) Shelton and Sarah Lindstrom, a couple who fought for the right to walk together as part of the school’s royalty court.¬†Fortunately, the parties were able to come to an agreement, and on Jan. 31, Dez and Sarah were able to walk hand-in-hand during the procession, and were greeted with cheers from their classmates.

Today, with friends from the school’s Gay Straight Alliance, Sarah and Desiree attended Creating Change and were kind enough to briefly chat with the Task Force.

They also met with Task Force Executive Director Rea Carey, who informed them that she will be mentioning them in her annual State of the Movement address tomorrow afternoon.
