Task Force works with Equality Maryland on state legislation

January 10, 2011

The Task Force is launching an exciting partnership with Equality Maryland to pass two critical pieces of state legislation in 2011: one bill would add gender identity and expression to the state’s non-discrimination law, the second would extend the freedom to marry to same-sex couples.  The Task Force is directly contributing staff, money, training, and technical assistance to Equality Maryland to enable them to build a strong field program capable of turning out thousands of pro-LGBT constituents to write, call, and lobby their legislators in favor of these vital bills.

I have spoken to and sent several emails over the last year or so to my state delegate concerning same-sex marriage and she assues me that she fully supports it. The last email I sent to her detailed the $2000 my husband and I pumped into DC’s economy connected to our December wedding, which lasted all of 15 minutes. This included the $100 tip to the very happy waiter we had for our dinner the night before the ceremony. I made it clear to her that Maryland businesses, Maryland workers, and Maryland itself were missing out on the financial benefits of allowing same-sex marriage.
